I'm not sure if folks are trying to artificially hype this film but I'm going to give my honest, spoiler free take.
TTM was very clever, if you don't know the premise, it's basically a group of kids/teens who find a haunted/cursed hand that allows you to connect with spirits. The background/origin of the hand is intentionally vague.
Anyhow, the kids mess around with it and record the sessions, post to social media, laugh, play hip hop music, drink and basically think of it as a haunted VR experience. However, we (as the audience) know they are playing with fire.
Now, as for actually scares, there's honestly not too many scary parts and the movies doesn't rely on jump scares - there weren't really any at all.
Personally, I judge A24 horror by the benchmark of Hereditary, which is about a 9/10 in my book.
With that in mind, I'd give TTM about a 6/10 as far as actual horror/scary content. It's a more of a psychological exploration of the relationship between the living and the dead and maybe a cautionary tale about messing with powers we don't fully comprehend. I'm my opinion, TTM is not as good as Midsommar, the Witch or even the Monster but probably better than Pearl or X.
If you're watching w kids, I'd say 13+ would be ok - mostly because there's some suicide material. Also, 2 or 3 grizzle/violent scenes, decent amount of blood, not too much gore, no sex at all, some profanity but nothing too crazy, there are some sexually explicit/graphic comments. and jokes made.
To recap: TYM is very clever, solid ghost/possession film but it's definitely NOT groundbreaking or revolutionary like the ad campaign makes it out to be.
You can wait to stream it.
