It is a nice humanist story , though the dialogue is typical McDonagh ( therefore less cinema than theatre ) and it does have some of his grotesque quirks though used for a humanist purpose . There is a strong suggestion that politics and especially the politics of the powerful is the subtext but maybe …. maybe not . It can be purely a story about people in general .
The performances are good . Colin Farrell has a character which can be performed to delight and he nearly succeeds . Brendan Gleason has a unidimensional character ( well almost ) and so even though he does well , he does not please much .
Martin McDonagh should make films because most others make poor films . But he is no film
maker . He is out and out a theatre artist and that shows . Which is not to say that I did not enjoy the film . But this could have been done better to take advantage of the medium . Starting with the script .
