I'll probably have to blame my timing of watching this show. Probably not. I just finished reading The Mahabharata BORI CE edition. And then watched the show. Tragic.
At any rate, Arjuna's portrayal is pathetic. I mean, that man has been time and again named amongst the greatest heroes of the world, alongside Theseus and Achilles. He is the man whose personality and life teaches more lessons than we can possibly finish learning. He is literally tagged as the 'Purushottam' beside Lord Rama. So, I don't know what to say when I see him being depicted as a weakling pining after a completely fictional girl, forsaking his morals and becoming every hero-worshipper's worst nightmare.
I understand glorifying an anti-hero. But why would you have to mandatorily villify a true hero in the process? Why can a person be shown for who they truly were depicted as - flaws and all?
I won't even get started on the whole teen drama of the girl gang. No words. Really. They are trying so so hard to prove that Uruvi is better than Draupadi, and that is so evident even without the appearance of Draupadi on the show. I mean, I don't understand how a girl engaging in teen drama can ever surpass the Empress of the entire Bharatvarsha. And I'm not comparing her with girls engaging in teen drama. Even Bhanumati is glorified to such an extent that the stretch of fiction is scary.
This tendency of tainting the heroes in order to try so hard to make the villains look like saints, is becoming a very old and tragic tactic, very fast. It's falling through.
I actually watched the show because of the fanfictional aspect of it. But ended up being disappointed. The characters could've been made gray instead of simply swapping the sides and keeping the black-and-white theme intact. It only made things so much worse.
Sorry that I'm writing such a negative feedback. But, I felt even worse about it. I'll, however, suggest people to go watch it because Uruvi's costumes are cute and so is her petulant teen-dramatic side. It's childish and cute. And probably a little less TV drama soap kinda cliched than the rest of the show.
It is Mahabharata that we're discussing. Not some regular soap that people don't even remember the character names of after it's ended. I expected some more traces of acceptable psychological depth. Some depth of any sort would've been welcome. Especially after the Mahabharata that we all have already watched, the kind of subtleties that were paid such close attention to in the making of the show, the depth and in-between-the-lines meanings and symbolism in every look, every word, every gesture. The acting prowess of every actor bringing their respective characters to life. (Let's not talk about Shaheer and Pooja. And seeing Arjuna here after seeing Shaheer brining Arjuna to life...) It had proven that the screen can portray depth too. Not just books.
So, I'll just say that I'm disappointed, but I don't regret having watched it.
