This move is so completely disjointed and awkward that both feel rushed and also drags on at the same time. There is barely any character building for the main characters which leaves you wondering why you should feel anything for them.
Its completely devoid of emotion and at the same time it relies on shock value at certain points. I always say the important things are implied. Sex scenes are one of those things that if you write the scene well you can convey the emotion while keeping it tasteful. That being said they put the same graphic rape scene in twice. There was no difference between the scenes, they just showed it twice. Its incredibly jarring the first time and trivial the second time. It was very apparent they just wanted to shock viewers into think it was a more powerful scene when really it was a waste of time you could have left out and still hold the same opinions about the characters.
Speaking of the characters this could be the worst casting I've ever seen for this type of movie. Adam Driver made the best of a bad situation and did well but Matt Damon and Ben Affleck offered nothing to this movie. Matt Damon for half the movie looked and sounded like a modern day man living in Texas. I mean it when I say they didn't even try to sound like the characters from Europe during the middle ages. Ben Affleck was at first unrecognizable because of the awful costume design. Once you realized it was him you were left wondering why they made him blonde. It looked unnatural and I don't understand why they chose this route over either keeping him his natural hair color or recast the role for a natural looking blonde actor.
This movie is incredibly underwhelming and its unfortunate people are giving this movie accolades when it should be left on the shelf to be forgotten.
