The book has an interesting premise with interweaving stories of the present and past. However for me the characters really aren't that likable because there are many scenes where they're hurting animals, torturing insects, bullying other children... So many other reviewers are praising the prose and the writing style, however I found it a little bit pretentious. Clearly this writer loves to hear himself talk. I felt like I needed to get through the whole book but honestly it was painful.
