The evident admiration of the writer for his subject means that his many foibles are too easily dismissed as ‘errors’ or ‘of his time’, disregarding his prejudices. Undoubtedly Churchill was a huge leader and his leadership dominates the war effort, sometimes to the detriment of others. He is to be admired for his many successes, but he is not, under any contemporary account, beyond reproach. He deserves better.
