I watched the story about the young Dr who found it difficult to become a resident after completing medical school. I really find it hard to believe he had a hard time finding a place to continue his training in neurosurgery. This story of course led to not having enough people of color as Dr’s. According to Google the African American population in America is 13.4%, the Hispanic population is 18.3%, white population is 76.3%, and Asian is 5.6%. Considering these percentages in population, it would only be correct that the numbers would probably hold true for the amount of Dr’s that are MD’s would correlate with each equalivant percentage in each race. I am 67 years old and have lived only in the southwestern US. I have had every kind of Dr in these various ethnic groups, including Indian Docs. Sometimes numbers can be construed (i.e. political polls) to show what someone wants to hear, or what they think they want to hear. I feel like most ethnic groups want 76% of the population to apologize for us being the color we are. My son went to a High School that was 85% Hispanic. He went into his counselors office while (after searching for scholarships on his own) looking for his college to go to and asked her, “Mrs____, do you have any scholarships that poor white boys can apply for?” He was serious, I felt very sorry for him. So, I think the color card can be played to extreme. There are those of us in the 76% that are also discriminated against. If it had not been for me taking a large check of retirement from my ex-husband, student loans, parent loans, 2 small scholarships, my son, my new husband, and I all working while he was in school, and him having 3 other roommates, did he finally finish. I am very proud to say he graduated 7th in his class in HS, graduated with his degree in Computer Engineering from college. He now works for Samsung in Austin and has been with them since graduating from college in 2007. There are stories out there about all Americans, working hard to progress, no matter your color. Everyone in America wants their group( LGBT), their color, (black, White, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian, Alaskan, Hawaiian, Puerto Rican) recognized! Can we not just say we are all Americans ya’ll!!! Yes, I speak Texan!
