2 stars because costumes are good and photography too.
Heavily fictionalised and its sad that those who never read a biography of Elisabeth might end up thinking she was some sort of Viennese Belle.
As opposed to Elisabeth Das Musical and the old movie Sissi , which portrayed Eisabeth as the troubled and complex human she was, this serial borrows traits from Disney stories ( Beauty and The Beast in particular - some of Elisabeth’s lines are even the same as Belle LOL) and creates a heavily fictionalised Elisabeth.
The episodes I watched were full of anachronism, with 1800s people thinking and talking like postmodern ones: the production portrays the main chapters through a modernist view based upon feminism and presentism.
Elisabeth comes across like yet another Disney-like heroin, her complexity as well as psychological depth completely left behind in favour of predictable lines and awkward behaviours ( episode 1 and 2).
Everything she does, especially in the first three episodes, is a reaction to others and the environment ( her mother, the system, etc) rather than the expression of her subjectivity.
Episode 1 is almost embarrassing , Elisabeth doing awkward things that would appear cool only to a 12 years old, or being rude to pretty much everybody.
I did not appreciate the Italian Baroness being casted according to stereotypes ( Episode 1)
It’s ok to watch for fun, but if you have an even remote interest about Elisabeth you’d better off opening a book on her, or even watch the German musical ( which is way deeper than this Netflix serial)
