I personally like the darker more violent sides of final fantasy and this is my jam. I appreciate that the protagonist isn't a brooding teenager like noctis. The game and characters are definitely more mature and it seems like the target audience is aimed for mature players. Getting through the story takes time with the cutscenes but it's not too much like final fantasy 13 was.
