Maybe Hosoda's worst. Retreading a lot of thematic and visual ground, the emotional stackes are confusing and the plot has a few really weird turns that I got very confused by as they felt unearned and/or illogical. Visually the film was mostly beautiful, the 3D world sometimes became a bit boring and flat (and enough with flying whales, it's a cheap cliche at this point). The characters are mostly likeable, but unclear motivations and feelings make it hard to emphatise at points and make certain actions feel more cringy and idiotic than heartfelt and impactful.
