This movie is gory. There's no sugar-coating the fact. So, before you watch it, I suggest you check out your specific trigger warnings and be prepared because I think this movie has a lot of triggers.
The gore and violence are over the top, I agree, but it's all there for a purpose, which, I think, justifies the use of such violence. But if you can take the gore (not ignore it, because it's an integral part of the narrative), it's an excellent movie.
Apart from that, if you last till the end, you are rewarded with a fitting conclusion and a message that will make you think. Keep in mind that this movie was released in the 80s. Considering that, it's impressive how they made everything seem so realistic. That's part of the reason why this hits so hard.
So overall, please don't ignore this movie because of all the gore. I assure you, there is a method to the madness.
