I am not a fan of Discovery, Picard, or much of Trek since Into Darkness.
Until SNW I had pretty much decided that the new show runners either didn’t get the ideas of Trek, or just didn’t care.
And now we have this. And it’s wonderful.
This is EXACTLY the show I had been hoping for from the third generation of Trek.
Every character is well drawn, well acted and authentic. I find La’an Noonien Singh to be prickly and a bit of a pain, but that’s because she’s a PERSON and I like that. I like that she’s not perfect and she’s played with energy and pathos.
Uhura is a revelation here. She is a genius at linguistics and finding her place in the universe. I like her and another out of the park performance.
Nurse Chapel, Ortegas, Number One, Hemmer, all likeable, well drawn, great performances.
Doctor M’Benga: subtle, nuanced, stand out performance
Spock is excellent. His relationship with T’Pring is fleshed out and works beautifully.
And then there is Pike. The Platonic ideal of a captain. Charismatic, bold, authentic and played pitch perfectly by Anson Mount. A man you believe would inspire his people to follow him to hell and back.
Not a clunker amongst the first season episodes, and a couple of absolute stand outs.
And episode 4 is up there with the best Trek has ever done. We are talking Wrath of Khan good.
Absolutely knocked it out of the park. Cannot wait for season 2.
