I'm sorry to say but it didn't blow me away! The whole album is pretty unremarkable.
I've typically always liked Ed Sheeran. He's an exceptional songwriter and I think his album Plus is amazing. It strikes a near perfect balance of raw material and studio production. I feel from there the albums tend to just cater more to writing for the masses and lose a lot of authenticity. That being said, I feel that this new album Subtract, would have made an incredible 2nd album to follow Plus. It's incredibly heartfelt and I feel that Ed may have been trying to get back to the basics of songwriting with a guitar, piano and a handful of chords (even if it does sound a little Lewis Capaldi sometimes) but unfortunately I find the whole thing uninspiring after the release of his other albums it just doesn't add up....see what I did there!
I'm sorry if this review seams harsh, I really do like Ed Sheeran. But as a songwriter myself (admittedly not as good as Ed) I feel the album was missing something that his older material delivered without fail. In my opinion, Ed has written one of the loveliest songs ever, and I plan to use it as my first dance in a few weeks time (I'm talking about the song Fall, a song that many of his 'fans' have never heard of)
I feel that I would still like to hear Ed write more songs like the ones on this album, and less like 'Galway girl' and 'lets get it on'. Okay it's a bad joke, but I hope you get my point. I'm still a fan of Ed Sheeran and will still listen to his music as he releases it, patiently waiting for him to awe me the way he did when I first heard Fall.
