A spiritual inquiry that even this cynical atheist found absorbing, challenging, and moving. Though preoccupied with today's world (America in particular), it is mostly wrought in a classical (distinctly European) formal style. That may spell art-house death for some devout multiplex-goers but, for viewers of a certain disposition, First Reformed is a film of welcome weight and substance: if you know who Robert Bresson and Ingmar Bergman are, dig in.
