I really don't understand the message behind this novel or why Nel weeps over Sula's death when she literally came into your home unannounced and SLEPT WITH YOUR HUSBAND ON THE SAME DAY. AND THEN, ON HER DEATHBED, SULA HAD THE AUDACITY TO ASK NEL WHY SHE DIDN'T JUST GET OVER IT, EVEN WHEN SHE WAS THE ONLY FORM OF COMPANION SHE HAD LEFT.
Ms. Morrison tried to have this aura of ambiguity around Sula and whether she is good or evil but it falls completely flat on it's face. There is no way that anyone can read this novel and tell me, objectively, that Sula had any redeeming qualities and was not just a petty sociopath who takes no accountability for the MANY horrible things she did. Freedom with no consequence is not a positive and fact that Sula "lived free" while ruining other peoples lives should not be celebrated.
