I've read a few reviews (James) who attacked the series because they believe they were pushing a DEI agenda. My god, I'm so tired of the constant whining of people who cannot review a piece of entertainment without interjecting their own biased political leanings (right or left).
As a fan of the books, I tried to be objective as possible. It was not a faithful adaptation from the novels. So don't come expecting that. It clearly states in the opening credits, based on Liu Cixin's novels. Choices were made to broaden the appeal of the series (make money) beyond the core group of fans of the books. The casting is standard Hollywood, attractive people living in above average surroundings like the majority of what is represented on TV today.
The production values are high, the acting is competent. The standout was Zine Tseng who portrayed, Ye. With so many moving parts (different characters and time periods) in the series, it sometimes lacked a central focus.
However, I did enjoy the series. Was it perfect, no. Could there be improvements in pacing or streamlining of characters for better flow for television, yes.
It's far from deserving of the number of 1 starts that the series is currently receiving.
