“Ginny and Georgia” exposes the emotional turmoil of teenagers and their relationships to one another and their parents. Likewise, parents, particularly Ginny’s mother Georgia have had trials in their lives. Georgia, after escaping an abusive childhood, has struggled to survive with her two children and has embezzled money and engaged in other criminal activity to survive and improve the lives of her children and herself. However, after many failed relationships and constant relocations, as well as her struggle to seem well-adjusted, her children have developed their own emotional struggles. For instance, Jenny desperately seeks a boyfriend’s love for happiness and feels intensely, professing both love and hatred toward her mother. Georgia’s secretive past supposedly should protect her children, but Ginny finds the mystery troubling.Fortunately, Georgia finds a sweet and loving man, Paul, the town mayor who genuinely loves her.
Although much of this drama is dark, there are many strengths in this series: excellent acting, powerful dramatic moments and script writing, appropriate music reflecting the characters’ moods, and an inner realism that exposes the struggles that make people behave erratically, unpredictably, and sometimes destructively. Still the characters show much love, and their tenderness and devotion are uplifting. Parents, adolescents, and young adults should appreciate this series, yet everyone should be able to recognize the complexity of the human experience in “Ginny and Georgia.”
