It boils down to being a movie about a white guy teaching a black guy about how to be black. YIKES.
Phenomenal performances from both lead actors...but I found myself cringing at how misguided aspects of the film was.
Don Shirley was a fascinating man and should have been the main character. I wanted to know his background but we are given nothing. The story of how a black man in the 1960s was able to attain a PhD would have been a more compelling introduction to the story, instead we get Tony's roots as a bouncer.
Don't bother with this one.
