Oh come on ... Interesting how RT (and Google) is only allowing us to see the 5 star ratings of this horrible film. And as much as I appreciate the good intentions from some of those well meaning reviewers celebrating the true life story of Joe Scaravella's restaurant and Italian culture (I am a full blooded Italian of immigrant grandparents) I cannot in good conscience give this movie a good review. Not because of it's incessant insult to my Italian ancestry and it's total lack of authenticity, but because it falls back on the same old traps of 21st century Hollywood. The acting is horrible (I am a big fan of Vince Vaughn) and the script/story thanks to director Stephen Chbosky and writer Liz Maccie continue (as per usual) to beat their audiences over the head with Hollywood woke, heartless, soulless ideology. RT gave this an 81% rating.. Need I say more? No!!! But I will.
Again, the true life story is wonderful and the best part of the movie is the very end (no coincidence) when the editor jumps to actual footage of "Enoteca Maria" (the real restaurant) out on Staten Island. If not for these outtakes, the movie would have been a total waste of time. There is not a single actor in this film that gave a performance worth mentioning. Especially given the years of experience on screen. Vince Vaughn and Susan Surandon are just horrible. Surandon is always horrible of course, on and off screen, but her performance in Nonnas is especially bad. It's time for this actress to retire. Audiences are tired of her and she have not given a single performance since Thelma and Louise that has added a shred of value to her body of work.
Listed as a comedy, but this is NO comedy. Not one funny moment in the entire film!! How is that possible with Vince Vaughn attached to this project? But truth told its barely a movie. First year film students could have paid Scaravella's story more homage. Aside from the obvious fails in the script and the horrible work done by Chbosky, Maccie, Vaughn and the others, Hollywood continues to pump out anti-family (this is NOT a tribute to the Italian family or our nonnas), anit-God, anti-Catholic (of course!) and anti-traditional values. This film is no different. Typical Hollywood. They just can't help themselves. That said, Vaughn needs to pick better projects, he is running on borrowed time as audiences are moving away from self-righteous, woke, meaningless filmmaking. This is one of those films. Shame on Joe Scaravella for participating in this farce and shame on Vince Vaughn for not reading the room. But then again, its hard to read a room when nobody is in it.
