Incredible how so many critics panned this album back in 1988, perhaps because it represented such a departure from her earlier work in the middle-late 1970s. But for me, this album remains among her best, combining better-known, now anthemic songs like “People have the Power” with quieter, more personal reflections like “Paths that Cross” and the title track. For Patti Smith fans, or those just being introduced to her work, this is a singular, special album, right up there with her justly celebrated classic “Horses” and “Easter”.
