The show is funny overall. However, had this show been aired today, many topics would have been approached very differently. There is a huge double standard between Claire and Junior. The parents freak out about Claire simply letting them know she is ready to have sex, yet Junior gets his girlfriend pregnant and is hardly punished at all. There’s also the topic of gender roles in a marriage. Michael has a HUGE issue with Jay wanting to get a job or going back to school. Jay is a stay at home mom after quitting her job as a stockbroker. When they go to therapy, Michal expresses concern with Jays ability to handle her role as a wife (being able to take care of her family) and her ability to go back to school. The show fails to acknowledge that a woman’s identity is more than just WIFE. And how there is such a thing as self fulfillment. There’s also the constant requests from Michael asking Jay to make him a sandwich. 🥪 LOL Again, the show is overall funny but there are so many episodes that are just cringe. 😬
