At first, I was excited to hear Ridley Scott was directing the film (since I really enjoyed Gladiator with Crowe and Phoenix). But after watching the film, was left wanting more from Scott. I wish there had been more accuracies with Napoleon’s character (as well as other key figures) and the liberties taken to make it an “entertainment” piece made the movie fall short of being credible. The movie lacked a sense of romance between Napoleon and Josephine … the two love making scenes seemed brutal and loveless.
The film also felt choppy and disjointed in its sequence. What saved this film in the end was some good acting by Phoenix, great set design and amazing cinematography! We’ll know more come nomination season!
