I do not understand why this show is getting so much love from the general public. Either there are WAY more Percy Jackson fans than I realized who decided they would like the show regardless of its actual quality, or the standards for a good show have massively fallen.
Don't get me wrong, I don't vehemently hate this show. It's alright in some areas. However, it is so fundamentally flawed to a point where I am not even comfortable saying that it's good.
The show functions as a SparkNotes version of the original book, speeding through important plot points from its source material without care for creating an actual cohesive narrative. There's not enough episodes and runtime to tell the story the book was trying to, and the show fails to adapt it well enough, to the point that the show's plot is a jumbled mess.
The visuals of the show (or lack thereof) consistently fail to impress. Are viewers really willing to overlook how cheap Percy unsheathing his sword looks for most of the show? They literally use camera tricks more often than not to avoid having to animate it. The gods also frequently fail to exude the power they are meant to, making the world feel much smaller and less magical. How magical can this world really be if Lin Manuel Miranda passes for a god?
Apart from its evident flaws, the Percy Jackson show also fails to be memorable in any way. Perhaps this comes from my bias as a book reader, but I cannot imagine anyone new to the Percy Jackson story coming away from this show wanting to see more. There isn't a single moment that sticks with you after the show is done, the visuals and the music are largely forgettable, and I'd even argue that the performances from the cast were merely "fine" overall.
The Disney+ Percy Jackson show isn't bad, it's just mediocre. And honestly, it saddens me that people are fine, even overjoyed, at getting something so mediocre for some reason. I wish I could love this show, but despite my best attempt to, I just can't even come around say that I even like it.
