I really love the world and characters built in the Caraval series. What I don't like is the writing. I hope others also bring this issue to light: There was so much repetition that it was annoying. If Tella is talking to someone, she will go through the exact thought process every time. It's very annoying. Readers don't forget the stakes in every chapter. Plus because of the repitition , I was so annoyed that the climax became a bit dull for me. I also skipped several paragraphs so I won't have to read the same things again and again. The second book has less of this issue but the third book is plagued by this problem.

Very interesting book. It's like an action movie with all these twists and turns plus the switching between characters gives it amazing depth. I was hoping "the remains" had a better ending though they were the entire cause of the book :D

Reading this in 2024, it seems like it's filled with the milked-out tropes of a quirky, boots-with-dress shy girl, a love triangle, faking a date for some selfish purpose, refusing to admit liking a girl in front of the popular crowd, the back-stabbing best friend and of course the hanging out, falling in love montage. Still it was a fun read. The ending was good. Predictable but good. Elliot was an unpredictable character.

I really loved it. It was hard to put down. The twists in the story had me at the edge of my on nerves. The ending was good. Being a mother to two girls, the idea of the baby being somewhere unknown was driving me crazy.
