I have never cried so much while reading a book. The research that Kristen does is amazing. I was raising kids with not a lot of thought to what was going on half way around the world. My brother and brother in law served in the Marines but very eary in the combat. My husband was in the navy bit only on small ships for salvage etc. I can happily say I was never part of the protests. My hats off to all who served and the nightmare they lived through.

This book written in 1966, then celebrated a jubilee 50 years later. I just never was connected with the book until very recently. It paints a picture of what slavery was like before the Civil War, and then what little changed for the blacks afterward. It was hard to read how the blacks were treated by fellow human beings.
