As a huge fan of both detective shows and supernatural stories, Dead Boy Detectives is, for me, the perfect intersection of both genres. I started watching expecting to love it--and it exceeded even that high bar. The world the show builds is quirky, fun, and seems to bleed off-screen as well, hinting at all manner of supernatural oddities and a deep history between the two titular dead boys. Each character is complex and resonant in a way I didn't necessarily expect from a show of this genre, which took it from good to excellent in my eyes. Even within the season's short 8-hour runtime, their individual emotional arcs unfold and play against each other in a way that is both beautiful and satisfying. The cases they solve are varied and intriguing, while providing natural opportunities to learn more about the protagonists and further their development as characters. On top of that, the show looks beautiful as well, with excellent costuming, sets, and an almost dreamlike atmosphere that immerses you fully in the world of the Dead Boy Detectives. I can't recommend this show enough, especially if you enjoyed shows like Wednesday or A Series of Unfortunate Events. It's a true gem.
