A much darker and deeper retelling; more true to the source material. The 1999 version has always been a favorite but now, in "Ripley", one can see how "The Talented Mr. Ripley" - as good as it is - was more Americanized and watered-down for the masses. Filmed in black and white, the mood is perfect with the entire second half of the series spoken almost exclusively in Italian. While I like them both, I prefer this Showtime/Netflix version.
