This book tries way too hard to be poetic. Stuff like, “…folding golds and roaring surf.” No one talks like this, much less thinks this way, in real life. I’m struggling to get through it although I haven’t given up entirely yet. Like one reviewer said, you have to reread sentences over and over just to catch the meaning, which is not fun in a novel. Also there is no way a 13 year old girl would act the way this character acts. Curses like a drunken sailor while the people listening to her foul mouth sit idly by taking it. Like right, that would really happen. I can’t suspend my disbelief, especially about the fact this book won a CWA Gold Dagger!
