I read the book before watching and so went in with a pretty specific expectation…. which was met perfectly. the film stays true to the novel with times in which i much preferred the movie then the book it was based on.
Overall the acting and CGI was a little shaky but i found the jumpscares and the Hushed actually scaring me. The Hushed were a great villain on top of the Vesps, playing on the same idea as the Walking Dead, where the monsters are seen as a quiet threat until they swarm, leaving the humans themselves to be the true villains.
Having the Hushed say that Ally is “fertile” is so incredibly messed up and genuinely a horrible threat. However the build-up of the release of the Vesps and the development of Glenn as a friend and definitely with the building up the Hushed as a villain felt really rushed. In my opinion this would have made a much better TV show than a movie. I didn’t like Glen all that much, he felt very “tough guy” without actually proving any toughness.
I liked how Ally was deaf, I feel that kind of recognition is rare in media, however I found it mildly irritating that the actress employed to present this deaf actress was in fact… not deaf. The actress herself was a reasonably good actress but i still feel like that probably a more inclusive casting would be apt considering the character herself is deaf.
The obvious comparisons to “A Quiet Place” are evident, but considering i turned that movie off within the first 15 minutes and this is a movie i will and have recommend(ed) to others it’s quite clear which is better.
Overall it’s a pretty good movie with a strong concept and a great story that was just let down with its aptness as a show rather than a film.
