There is no perfect version of Dickens’s wonderful tale. Such perfection resides only within the minds and hearts of individuals, and will remain utterly subjective when it comes to definitive collective assessments. Zemekis’s version is no different, yet provides wonderful visuals, true to form dialogue, and an accurate rendering of the story and its overarching message. The film may have been better served with a broader group of actors versus Jim Carrey casting such a swath by playing multiple characters. Nevertheless, his portrayal of Scrooge was outstanding. This film careens towards “Christmas Classic” designation with every passing year. Yes, it’s a bit dark for the very young, but nevertheless wonderful. I look forward to multiple watchings every Christmas season.
