One of today's topics was constructive criticism, so I assume this is falling on deaf ears, but I needed to get this off from my chest.
I always thought, 'The View', to be a platform for strong, progressive women and a proponent of nonviolence.
Yesterday's comments on Will Smith from Whoopi were disturbing and disappointing. The remaining panel members appeared to understand that under the worst of circumstances, violence is never the answer. However; not one woman on the panel addressed Will Smith's depiction of his role as a, 'protector of women', in his acceptance speech.
Did they miss that he was laughing at the joke prior to seeing his wife's reaction? Sunny Hostin did address his convoluted perception of what love will do.
Jada Pinkett Smith is an extremely opinionated, powerful woman, as demonstrated on her program, 'Red Table Talk'. Given the physical advantages of a man over a woman, had she been attacked physically, I would have expected her husband to protect her, but believe she is quite capable of verbally defending herself. The coverage of the Oscars is extensive and it would have been addressed. (On a side note, I really hope she had a conversation her husband about not having to defend her.)
Unfortunately, the viewers, recipients, organizers and all involved were robbed, due to someone's inability to control their actions. Having Alopecia, or Will's past problems are not a sufficient reason to inflict physical pain on another human being. We all have issues, but it's how we deal with them that have a positive or negative impact. I hope he gets the help he needs and is able to work through his problems. It's unfortunate that he made it everyone else's problem. At a time when racial divides run rampant, I was disappointed in the people on social media, exalting his actions, yet encouraged by people of color denouncing his actions. There's enough violence in the world right now. We don't need it being encouraged.
Chris Rock is to be commended for his grace and rationale in taking the high road. Though two days late, Will's apology to Chris Rock is appreciated. Will and Jada Pinkett Smith are people of great advantage and wealth. It's been their choice to live their live publicly.
Ladies, you let this opportunity slip by you....
