This is a brilliant film that gives insight into what it is like to have no capacity to find deeper meaning to life other than survival. The characters clearly could not fight through tough circumstances by choosing to love and console one another (and the horse) in the midst of their tribulations! At least if they could've done that, then they could have ALL died feeling as if their life was worth living because they deeply valued one another. The horse is the moral voice of the film indicating, 'if you do not love me and appreciate me; then I won't labor for you or even desire life anymore'. If one has to suffer and die; at least love is the requirement or there is no purpose to existence whatsoever. At least this is what the horse is communicating. The horse is smarter than his masters, clearly! This film is a total masterpiece!
