While I suspected we'd see some progress on various plot points--and we did--having followed the series, I was completely surprised at several turns. No cheating on the part of the author--the clues were all there! There were twists and turns and emotional payoffs but I fear to say too much because I don't want to spoil anything. At several points along the way I wished the quest could have been called off or prevented but I kept reading, on the edge of my seat.
The blending of family drama with events that affected all of Faerie has been there all along but the pressure has been building for a few books now. While everything we've ever wondered isn't answered or solved, the progress to date opens up new questions and interesting possibilities. Few long-running series have been as satisfying to me as October's journey. Alongside Toby's, Antigone (aka Annie, the sea witch, the Luidaeg) has had her own long-running story which is intertwined and equally satisfying.
