I thought this is some of the best acting I've seen in a long time from Sean Penn, who I usually don't care for. Mel Gibson was really good and a very empathetic character. I was completely immersed in the drama. All the characters were very good at evoking the audience's emotions, at least I was quite moved. The barbaric experiments used in "asylums" at this time were deeply disturbing
