I really really wanted to love this! And I was so disappointed. Besides a few chuckles here and there and the fun bright set/clothes, it was lackluster at best. (That's why there's 2 stars instead of 1).
I was expecting more from the movie's message. It felt like a disjointed failed thesis in feminism studies. It did look like it was super fun to make, like a rich kid just throwing money around (not a good feeling to leave the theater with, especially in this economy).
I couldn't even get lost in the world because of how all over the place the thing was. The plot is the definition of weak, and the opportunity to let the true definition of feminism (what any Barbie lover / Mattel exec would hope for out of the film) be illustrated was wasted.
It was try hard without enough irony. If you're going to play that route, do the dam* thing. Gerwig played it safe. And it was sad and weird. I'm not surprised Diablo Cody stepped back from directing it... she knew it would be a feat and knew she couldn't give it the irony Mattel would approve of.
Don't waste $40 bucks on this. Do yourself a favor and let it fall in your lap when some streaming service hosts it.
