This book changed my life when I read it aged 19. I will be 50 next year and it's story and characters have never left me.
This novel opened my eyes and heart to the extremes of the human condition. In equal measures for its capacity for greed, heartless wickedness and strength of endurance for survival.
I am equally appalled, sickened and ashamed yet filled with humble admiration and love for those who were forced into slavery and their descendants who stand in defiant testamony and continue to strive, with others, for equality in today's world where slavery in its many sickening forms, still exists.
