This movie was based on a trilogy of books: Colossus, The Fall of Colossus, and Colossus and the Crab, by Dennis Feltham Jones. I SO enjoyed the movie! It was up there with my faves right alongside forbidden planet. We can see in the movie what artificial intelligence can develop into.
