Thought provoking whimsical unputdownable - I rarely give 5 stars only to Orwell , T E Lawrence , Steinbeck and Dickens so the book is in exalted company- I only gave Birdsong 4•5 stars

SO DISAPPOINTED THAT THIS WAS A ONE-OFF: entertaining from the start and got better. Pathos , fun and all-round entertainment. So good that I was nearly ready to start paying my licence again but alas no episode 2

To cut this monster of a book down to just over 6 hours is truly the work of a master . Andrew Davies is at the top of his game : the dowery was 584000 francs- not 650000 . My favourite word (valetudinarian) was not used and Boulatruelle escaped my notice. After the huge disappointment of the ABC Murders a remarkable comeback by the beeb. Congratulations all round.
