Theres no conflict for the protagonist. Caro's mulan is a borderline superhero as a child because of "chi." Her character development is "I'm a misunderstood badass because I'm a girl" to "I told you I was better than you, now you know it too." Not to mention the Rouhan (huns) are basically wizards because- you guessed it- chi. It takes a story of self realization and sacrifice, and turns it into a crappy knockoff gender bent doctor strange.
