From the acting to the styling, to the set design to even the score. This adaptation of Rebecca fails to convey the true omnipresence she displays in both the book and the 1940 film, especially in the first two acts. The biggest issue with this adaptation is that it does not provide a fresh point of view or any sort of fresh take on the themes of the story. It misses many visual opportunities that the previous adaptation simply did not have because of its time of production. However, the elements that they did choose to utilize fall short in comparison to the previously mentioned work. Much like most remake Rebecca by Netflix results as an unnecessary, unthrilling, underachieving waste of two hours and three minutes.
I'd also like to mention that the casting of the film is also one of its failures. Giving the talented Lily James and the always charming Armie Hammer their dues. The sentiment and chemistry displayed earlier by Fontaine and Olivier are completely lost in translation throughout the new adaptation. James' performance lacked curiosity and vulnerability while Hammer's performance lacked complexity and duality.
