SPOILERS! READ AT OWN RISK:
If you are a true lover to the Tomb Raider games, then this may not be for you. I love the Tomb Raider games and I was excited to see this movie, but they were just things I can not get through. First off, Lara goes on to find Yamati to continue her fathers research, with a group of explorers, documentaries and a group of friends. This movie has her finding Yamati with ONE random man, because she wants to find her father. Already key points that change the course of the game/movie. One to continue research, and one to find her father.
On top of that, they have the evil cult leader Mathias as a man well kempt and having modern world resources which is not the case at all.
The action in the Game Series is packed with everytbing you could want, but the movie- no so much. There really is not that much action besides jumping ship, and escaping the tomb. That’s it.
But one major issue I have, is the father. In the Game series her father is dead-gone. He was murdered after all. In the movie he’s alive? What!?!? That defeats her whole character and the whole plot! Lara does the things she does to continue the research of her father, to make him proud, and to be connected with him for the love she had for him, but also to figure out the truth of her fathers death! That’s what drove Lara to do the things she does. The movie is somehow saying the father is on the island of Yamati?! Are you kidding? The key points in this movie are horrid, like play the video game or watch all the cutscenes, this movie had so much potential! I feel it was a big let down. Not saying this movie is complete thumbs down, but not enough to be given a whole thumbs up.
I rate: 7/10
If you love the Tomb Raider series, and are expecting something to be like that with this movie, sorry to say but you’ll be annoyed quick like I was. I hated how they changed such key factors. On top, the ending of the movie suggests she is going to continue her journey to stop trinity, but how? When you only have finding artifacts as the motive? There needs to be so much more redone before they could make a sequel. My opinion, get someone who has played the game, or loves the game franchise and build off that. Not get someone who just wants an “action” pact movie. There was not that much action. Very sad about the Movie for it had so much going for it.
Overall, give it a watch and you will enjoy, if you do not get annoyed by major key points being changed.
