So, where do I start?
I believe this movie to be unlike any other where in any other story, an ending of this sort where the "dark night" aspect of filmmaking only arrives near the end of the cut would be built upon to spread a message that aims to inspire others to do the right thing (etc). Instead of following this path, it flips it on its head.
From an overall basis, this movie feels like a good watch if you want a mix of drama and comedy while maintaining all the aspects that these genres deliver. From Jeff's (Tobey Maguire) dilemma's with his buddy's wife to the neighbor, his world falls apart in the most comedic way possible, while he starts to question everything he does. We feel sympathy for him throughout, but we also feel conflicted as the actions he commits through his faults are very complex and (sometimes) unendearingly unforgivable in his case. Jeff's wife (Neily) serves as the ultimate challenge for Jeff throughout his journey. Without spoiling the movie, his wife is the backbone for his question that drives him throughout the movie.
Tobey Maguire can do a fine acting job when it comes to movies that dive deep into his head and thinking process and how it's like to deal with these conflictions that his character goes through. Tobey (for me) completely embodied the character of Jeff and made us sympathize with him way more than we should've. Even if Jeff does some things that seem way out of hand and deserve it's rightful punishment, Tobey embraces the arc of Jeff to the point where sometimes, our point of view changes completely for some scenes. The supporting roles from actors like Elizabeth Banks do a fine job with this film as well, but the real starrer and who the spotlight is on the most is Mr. Maguire himself.
If you really care about filmmaking or storytelling, and any movie you see needs to live up to a criteria that most good drama's/comedies live up to, then this movie is not for you. However, if you're looking for a laidback comedy starring Tobey Maguire and Elizabeth Banks that will simultaneously make you feel many emotions that this film has to give, and a film that you decided to pick up for your own convenience, it's worth a watch in my book.
