pros:
- beautiful environments
- good cinematography / camera work
- interesting worldbuilding and characters
- solid mix of fantasy and horror
- eerie sound design
- linear, easy to progress, clear direction … at times difficult but never enough to get you stuck
- some of the bosses (e.g. the musician and the rake guy) have really beautiful VFX. the rake guy in particular is kind of a masterpiece of surreal horror imo.
cons:
- the story is not entirely clear, why did they shrink for example? its sort of a smattering of mythology and folk tales and certainly has a clear storyline (saving the sister, cleansing the evil bramble, trolls and king Niel, etc) but the big picture is s bit nonsensical.
- a few bugs throughout, and some mechanics arent super clean (e.g some of the climbing / jumps dont always trigger as you expect)
- i would have preferred to stay more with the forest / dark fantasy vibe, going into the zombie stage was ok but not my fav.
- its certainly indie. although there is a lof of content and its quite polished, theres some inconsistecy in quality. you can tell they invesred more time into certain scenes / characters than others, which is to be expected.
- unreal has some issues with shadows and hair at times.
takeaways: for those who like relatively linear games thst wont be an utter time suck, and are into dark fantasy, highly recommended.
