read the critical comment of Herbert McCabe (Manuals and Rule Books) : this is my opinion as well: in order to a good thing , that is, to rule out the relativists who think that there is not any natural law ("rule books" in his football metaphor) , John Paul II does a bad thing while pretending that the natural law coincides with the human traditions he prefers (the "manuals" in McCabe's football metaphor).
