Someone said this show has its major eye-roll moments but it is still pretty good. That is the perfect description of this show if you don't want to write a long breakdown. Important Note: if you judge this show by the first episode, you have definitely missed how thrilling this show actually is. The first episode is slow in the middle, and in totality not as rich or satisfying as the rest is (overlooking the eye-rolls). Throughout this show, the cliches are there, the childish conversations are there, the eye-roll moments are there, unrealistic motivations and ideologies that are not sold to a strong degree of believability exist, missed opportunities to make pearls out of some plot aspects are there. BUT, underneath all that (which every show these days seems to have, just as much or more, let's be honest), is a truly captivating, thrilling, interesting, creative, and entertaining ride. And it stands out there. Yes, you may have a valid suspicion that they might mess it all up before they tie the story together (assuming they get the chance to continue to another season, which so far has been denied), but that's not the point yet.
One problem with online critics is many times they look at things through some weird lens they have created for themselves in an effort to make perpetuate their ideas about themselves and how insightful they are. They sometimes call great things bad and call bad things good. This is quite true with many of the reviews you will see here.
The acting is nothing short of excellent. Simply put it is satisfactory. Any review you see that said otherwise was made by someone who is biased by their own self-created lenses. Happens all the time, no worries.
Finally, although the story is engaging (IF this genre, as in sci-fi action superhero stuff, is your cup of tea), this is not a show that is clean from adult language and context including implied sex scenes. And it is definitely not lacking violence. However, it's definitely not one of those shows that seem to have an agenda to put a lot of adult language or scenes. Rather, adult content is here and there, but it is present. And though violence is readily present and graphic, it is not unnecessary or gratuitous, it is only relevant to the storyline occurring when it is meaningful to the story.
One more tining. Without giving much away, I was annoyed with the lack of believability of "the code" regarding killing and I was turned off by its insistence. But now I get why it is a part of the story. This aspect was probably a major component of whatever comics this show is based on, That is not an easy pill to make work in a serious film, because it can easily contradict common sense. But this is where awesome writing stands to create diamonds out of dust. Almost any plot can be made believable, though it is not an easy feat. This show did not succeed, in my opinion, in making this aspect believable. But this is definitely something that the overwhelming majority of writers and directors would have failed at as well. All things considered, the show still deserves a higher rating than tons of Netflix shows if based on what is a good watch.
