An amazing show, despite how cheesy the effects and jokes can be. Kikaida (or Kikaider) is about an android created by a genius robot engineer named Komyoji, who's being held against his will by the terrorist organization known as DARK (headed by Professor Gill). DARK's goal is to dominate the world through the use of other super-androids Komyoji has been forced to create. The main/recurring cast is Jiro, Mitsuko, Masaru (Mituko's younger brother), Hanpei Hattori (a private detective in over his head), Komyoji, Professor Gill, and an awesome archenemy android dedicated to destroying his older brother.
Kikaida (named Jiro) is special since he was secretly intended to be built with a conscience circuit that would allow him to operate independently of DARK's control. However, near the day of the circuit's completion, Komyoji and his daughter, Mitsuko, are stopped. Jiro manages to help Mitsuko escape, but Komyoji is separated from his bio-mechanical family & the terrorists and ends up with amnesia. Jiro makes it his mission to stop his DARK brother and sister droids from destroying society and protect the children of Komyoji and their friends.
The show deals with the concept of what it really means to be human and the power of what technology can do in the right or wrong hands. Jiro's incomplete conscience circuit can lead to him falling under DARK's control for short glimpses, prompting Mitsuko to beg that she complete the mechanism. He refuses multiple times since the circuit would potentially take away what free will he has and the humanity he had developed over time. Jiro also feels remorse for having to kill his own robotic siblings and tears up near the end of the episode as he rides into the sunset. It's heavily implied or even outright stated that Mitsuko and Jiro have feelings for each other, but Kikaida tries to distance himself to keep everyone safe.
The action scenes are also really cool if I'm recalling it correctly. The problem with watching this show is that finding official copies is hard and they're usually expensive. If you can get your hands on the series, I can't recommend it enough.
