Dune contains so much information, that I wanted to see how they were going to introduce it all, because that is the real challenge with this story and putting on a movie screen. I believe they did a good job with that... on somethings.
I did enjoy the movie very much but I have read the book. I cannot say if the story line, characters and reasons were clear enough for people that have no prior knowledge of that universe. I hope it was.
That being said, there was a few opportunities were they could of added essential background information (what was a mentat? and not allowing AI technology in their word) and a missing character (Feyd-Rautha). Pretty important stuff, I think.
I did enjoy the selection of actors, specially the choice of Paul. Yes, I agree he does not have the build of a fighter but what regular 15 year old boy does? His emotional scenes were at the right level for me. He is a 15 year old boy with no understanding of what is really going on with him and the decisions being made around him and for him. He is slowly becoming more emotionally aware that he has to grow up and fast.
I recommend seeing this movie, especially in an IMAX theater, but I highly recommend reading the book too before watching part 2, and hopefully other Dune books if they make more movies (I hope). Dune is such a great book, that I do not think a movie or a show will ever get it completely right. But this director and cast did a great job with it and I cannot wait for part 2!!
