This series is really unique. I didn’t read the books so can’t judge on the transition from page to screen.
It looks and feels incredible. It’s a significant step up from Star Wars and MCU with cinematography more reminiscent of Dune which is about the best I’ve seen. CGI is extensive and novel but naturally delivered and of a flawless quality in 4K. The direction is extremely polished too as though Apple itself were selling a new product.
Characterisation is deep and complex which slows the pace in some episodes but the payback is that you really get absorbed into the struggles of the main characters. It projects biblical and profound messages of morality that are quite thought provoking and cerebral, more so than anything I can recall. It’s said Asimov had Shakespeare in mind when he wrote the books. I see this in the complexity and intellectual requirements needed by the viewer to keep up. This isn’t a popcorn movie!
This series provides brief glimpses of almost every other sci-if big hitter you can imagine, but Foundation breaks new ground with much more deeply fleshed out paradigms to make it fuller and impeccably grounded. With this being a series rather than a film it has the time to do this. It also firmly hits home on a culturally involved level that draws you to the point of witnessing a deeply plausible civilisation, rather than watching a spectacle.
You can watch this on several levels but if you’re playing on your phone whilst watching this you won’t get the critical detail. For me, I gave this my soul focus and the payback is that it’s the best TV I’ve watched for a good twenty years. But I’ll let you decide.
