Ellis has sleepwalked her way through her life in Long Island. She is fond of Tony, loves her kids, and tolerates her husband’s family. When she is confronted with his infidelity, she accepts it without question. What is the matter with this woman?
She probably would have done better with Jim. At least she would have been among people she understood and wouldn’t have had to abandon her mother. I found myself caring less than I wanted to.
Maybe the way to look at these books are as tales of immigration/emigration and the price people often pay in adjusting to new cultures.
