So, like, a lot of people knock this movie for pacing, but I’m gonna make this pretty clear: Dragon Quest games are VERY LONG. I haven’t played any Dragon Quests other than 7, but it came with TWO discs and (after much rage quitting cuz I was, like, 7) it took me 2 weeks to actually beat the game. If you want the same pacing as one of those games in movie form, you best be ready to dedicate an entire day to that film, just saying.
I don’t know why people bash the animation, it’s pretty damn good. Honestly makes you feel like you’re watching a video game (spoiler alert: that’s what this all comes from).
I also saw people complain about the dubbing. Well, I watch anime, and I watch it subbed. So I watched this in the original Japanese language with English subtitles and I kinda loved the voice actors (another spoiler alert for our movie aficionados: the lips synch a lot better when you watch it in the language they were designed to speak in). If you’re ok watching it like that, I highly recommend it. I’m looking at all my fellow anime weebs out there.
Only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was just cuz the overall story didn’t make me go “DAYUM LETS WATCH IT AGAIN!!”, but I definitely enjoyed it, meaning watching it is NOT a waste of time.
Without spoiling everything, the movie ends in a direction I didn’t expect, but DEFINITELY hit the inner gamer in me, and lives up to the title. It honestly makes you wanna go ahead and play the video games again, which I assume is the point. If you liked the games, this is a must watch. If you didn’t, but kinda like an anime-ish story line, give it a shot. Otherwise, it’s probably not your cup of tea. We weebs are a niche bunch after all.
